The Vision: Bringing Confidence and Consistency Into a New Home
A family of four relocated from one Birmingham home to another, moving into a newly constructed spec home that was already completed and painted by the time they took ownership. While the house itself was beautiful, it lacked the technology infrastructure needed to support how the family lived day to day.
They were already familiar with Control4 from their previous home and appreciated the idea of a centralized smart home system. However, their prior experience felt incomplete. Lighting keypads were not engraved, automation scenes were underutilized, and the system never fully supported their lifestyle.
Their goal for the new home was simple. Take a platform they already trusted and implement it properly from the beginning. The system needed to feel intentional, intuitive, and refined.
The Challenge: Retrofitting a Finished Home Without Compromise
Because the home was already built and finished, all technology upgrades needed to be installed without disrupting walls, finishes, or design details. The scope was significant.
The family wanted comprehensive lighting control, automated privacy through motorized shades, security, cameras, reliable Wi-Fi, and entertainment throughout the home. They also wanted to continue using Sonos, which they were comfortable with, while still benefiting from Control4 automation.
The challenge was to deliver a cohesive, well-supported system inside a finished home while maintaining a clean, polished result.
The Design: Thoughtful Automation Across the Entire Home
The Sound Vision approached the project by building a complete Control4 system around the family’s daily routines, while integrating select technologies they already enjoyed.
Every decision focused on usability, consistency, and long-term reliability.
Lighting Control: Precision at Scale
Over 90 wireless lighting controls were installed throughout the home, replacing standard switches with a cohesive and intentional lighting system. Custom engraved button caps were used throughout, eliminating confusion and making the system immediately understandable for every member of the family and for guests.
Scenes were programmed to support real life. Morning routines, evenings at home, entertaining, and bedtime all became simple, repeatable experiences rather than manual adjustments.
Automated Shades: Privacy and Elegance
Between 16 and 20 Lutron Palladiom roller shades were installed in primary bedrooms, street-facing windows, and other areas where privacy and light control mattered most.
The Palladiom system was selected for its refined aesthetic and premium finishes. Gold and brass hardware paired with carefully selected fabrics allowed the shades to feel like part of the architecture rather than an added feature.
Shades operate automatically throughout the day and can also be controlled through Control4 keypads, touchscreens, or mobile devices.
Audio and Video: Familiar Technology, Fully Integrated
The home was outfitted with Sonos audio at the homeowner’s request. While this is not always The Sound Vision’s preferred approach, the system was carefully integrated into Control4 to maintain a unified experience.
Two Sonos-based surround sound systems support family movie nights and casual viewing. Additional audio zones serve daily living areas, a dedicated workout room, and outdoor spaces.
Four primary displays were installed throughout the home:
- A Frame TV in the kitchen
- A large OLED television in the main family room
- An 85-inch display in the lower-level media room for family movie night
- An outdoor TV on the lanai for casual viewing and entertaining
All displays and sources are controlled through the Control4 interface for consistency and ease of use.
Security, Cameras, and Peace of Mind
A complete Honeywell security system was installed and integrated into Control4, providing alarm monitoring, door lock control, and system status at a glance.
Luma AI-powered cameras offer intelligent video surveillance, allowing the family to monitor activity around the home without constant alerts or unnecessary notifications.
Together, these systems deliver security that works quietly in the background.
Network and Remote Support Infrastructure
A robust Arachnis network was installed to support the demands of a fully connected home. Reliable Wi-Fi coverage ensures stable performance for streaming, control, and everyday use.
The system also includes WattBox power management, Oversee Connect, and The Sound Vision’s standard remote monitoring and support tools. This allows both the homeowner and The Sound Vision to proactively manage the system, resolve issues quickly, and keep everything running smoothly over time.

This project required careful planning and execution due to the home being fully finished before technology installation began. The Sound Vision worked directly with the homeowners to design a system that respected the architecture while delivering meaningful automation.
