Complete smart home upgrade for a 4,500 square foot Northville custom home built by Mike Miller Homes, featuring Crestron Home OS, Crestron panelized lighting with 70+ loads and Horizon keypads, 8-zone whole-home audio with Sonos Port integration, James Loudspeaker hidden surround sound, Monitor Audio in-ceiling speakers, and enterprise networking.

The Project
This Northville family built their custom home with Mike Miller Homes in 2019, and The Sound Vision designed a comprehensive Crestron system from the beginning. The system managed 70+ lighting loads throughout the 4,500 square foot home, controlled climate and security, and delivered audio to eight zones. For a year and a half, everything performed exactly as intended.
But as the family of five settled into their routines and streaming technology evolved, they realized the interface could be simpler and music could play a bigger role in how they enjoyed their home. They weren’t facing a system failure. They were ready for an evolution.
The Challenge
The original 2019 Crestron system was stable and reliable, managing panelized lighting with Horizon keypads, eight zones of audio, HVAC scheduling, security, and surveillance. Everything worked, but the user experience no longer matched how the family actually lived in the home. They wanted control that felt as intuitive as their phones, effortless music streaming, and a platform that would keep their home feeling current for years to come.
The Solution: Modern Control Without Starting Over
The Sound Vision presented Crestron Home OS, a platform that would work with the existing Crestron panelized lighting, Horizon keypads, climate control, security system, and all eight audio zones. The hardware could stay. The experience would transform completely.
We also recommended adding Sonos to bring effortless music streaming throughout the home. A single Sonos Port would feed all eight audio zones, giving the family instant access to every streaming service with AirPlay support. Crestron’s 20 percent upgrade incentive made the investment even more compelling. We scheduled four days on-site to complete the installation.
Family Room Surround Sound
The family room features a sophisticated hidden surround sound system that delivers reference-grade performance without any visible speakers. James Loudspeaker small-aperture speakers for the five listening channels hide completely within the coffer beams, remaining invisible while delivering precise, immersive audio. A 12-inch James Loudspeaker PowerPipe subwoofer installed in the floor provides deep, powerful bass without occupying any visible space or disrupting the room’s clean aesthetic.
This invisible integration means the family enjoys cinema-quality sound for movies, sports, and gaming while maintaining the beautiful architectural details of the space. The kids can watch movies with theater-level immersion, and the parents can entertain without technology dominating the design.
Eight Zones of Elevated Audio
Beyond the family room’s hidden surround sound, seven additional zones deliver audio throughout the home with Monitor Audio in-ceiling speakers. The kitchen, office, covered porch, basement gym, kids’ media space, primary bedroom, and primary bathroom all have independent audio control.
The Sonos Port integration meant every zone could now stream Spotify, Apple Music, or any other service instantly. AirPlay support let family members send audio from their phones directly to any room.
Lighting, Climate, and Security Unified
The Crestron panelized lighting system with 70+ loads remained unchanged physically, but the control experience improved dramatically. Horizon keypads throughout the home now connected to Crestron Home OS, offering faster response times and the ability to create lighting scenes directly from the app.
HVAC scheduling adapted to the family’s actual patterns. Security and surveillance systems remained fully functional but became easier to monitor through the new unified interface. Yale locks integrated seamlessly. Araknis enterprise networking ensured stable connectivity throughout the entire 4,500 square foot home.
Professional Installation and Long-Term Partnership
The Sound Vision completed the upgrade in four days. Because we had designed and installed the original system in 2019, we understood exactly how the home was wired and programmed. This familiarity allowed us to work efficiently, integrate the Sonos Port with the existing eight-zone audio distribution, reprogram every subsystem, and test every function thoroughly.
The family had chosen Mike Miller Homes to build a quality custom home in Northville. They had chosen The Sound Vision to make that home intelligent and responsive. A year and a half later, they chose us again to keep their investment current.
The Results
The home feels brand new. The Crestron Home app puts lighting, climate, security, and audio in one intuitive interface. Lighting scenes activate with a single tap. Music flows effortlessly through every zone. The family room delivers cinema-quality surround sound from speakers they can’t see.
The family doesn’t think about the technology anymore. They just enjoy it. The investment they made in 2019 wasn’t wasted. It was elevated. And because Crestron Home OS is a forward-looking platform, their home is prepared for whatever comes next.
